O problema de explicar o Twitter é que o release inicial foi malfeito. Como assim, o Twitter é um "serviço de microblog"? Quem escreveu isso certamente nunca teve blog. As duas coisas podem até ter alguma ligação, mas são tão diferentes quanto o caju e a castanha.

É muito difícil resumir o Twitter numa definição que caiba em 140 caracteres. Basicamente porque o Twitter pode ser, sei lá, mil coisas. O máximo que alguém pode fazer é definir o que seja o Twitter na sua experiência particular. Ou então, num ataque de pretensão, dizer qual seria, no seu entender, o melhor uso do Twitter.

Pois bem. Eu vou dizer qual é, no meu entender, o melhor uso do Twitter.

Para mim o Twitter é o brinquedinho que promove qualquer um à função mais importante da sociedade da informação: a função de editor.

Nunca você teve tanto poder de editar a informação que consome. No Twitter, quem decide o grau de utilidade e de futilidade do que quer saber é você mesmo. Milhares de produtores e distribuidores de informação estão ao seu alcance ― inclusive, por que não, os jornais, revistas, sites e blogs de sua preferência.

Quando você decide "seguir" alguém (ou "algum perfil", no jargão da coisa), na verdade você está fazendo uma assinatura do conteúdo que essa pessoa ("esse perfil") produz ou distribui. Uma assinatura que pode ser interrompida a qualquer instante, se você parar de achar suficientemente útil ou fútil o que lê.

Do arroto do bebê recém-nascido da sua amiga à morte do Michael Jackson, tudo sai primeiro no Twitter. E só as notícias realmente relevantes ― seja a queda do avião no oceano, seja a surra de Melissa Cadore em Yvonne ― continuam repercutindo por mais do que algumas horas.

(No Twitter tem de tudo, menos notícia velha.)

Se a essa altura do segundo tempo você ainda não aderiu ao Twitter, é porque deve ter entrado por cinco minutos e não entendido nada. É normal. Mas aceita um conselho? Tente de novo.

Para começar, não precisa escrever nada. Siga (assine) seus amigos e suas fontes preferidas de informação e diversão. Veja quem eles estão seguindo (assinando) e aumente seu cardápio. Preste atenção em quem eles retuítam ― a retuitagem é a mais importante forma de edição no Twitter.

Rapidinho você vai entender para que esse troço serve. Aos poucos, você vai disparar menos e-mails. Vai aposentar os Powerpoints. Vai tornar seu blog mais relevante. E, quando se der conta, terá se transformado num editor.

Nell (1994)

Nell is a girl who's been brought up in an isolated world. The only person she knew was her mother and twin sister. They lived together in a cottage in the forest. Nobody has ever met Nell. After her mother's death, she's discovered by the local doctor Jerome. He's fascinated by her, since she speaks an mangled language, developed by her sister and herself growing up; "twin speak" if you will. But Paula, a psychology student, wants her observed in a laboratory. The judge decides they get three months to observe her in the forest, after which he'll decide about Nells future.
